More Golf Clubs Upgrading Driving Ranges

A growing number of UK golf clubs have taken the plunge and spent money updating their driving range facilities in the past year, The Golf Business reported.

The news provider explained that better driving range facilities attract new customers to golf clubs, which is why so many are keen to introduce new technology and update their driving ranges.

It cited the example of Paultons Golf Club near Southampton, which was acquired by Stellar Asset Management and will now undergo a major refurbishment of its driving range.

Speaking to the news provider, a spokesperson from the organisation stated: “Taking inspiration from current trends in the US, the driving range will be transformed into a family, sports and entertainment space providing full-service food and beverages, sports bars and a multimedia private event space.”

Wallsend Golf Club in Northumberland, meanwhile, plans to blend virtual reality technology with its driving range to provide an experience that is unique in the UK. The hope is that by doing so, the club will appeal to a broader and younger audience.

There are also centres using microchipped golf balls at their driving ranges to provide instant feedback to players about the accuracy and distance of each shot.

This kind of technology could help to reinvigorate the sport, which is struggling to attract new players, an article for Golfshake recently suggested.

Citing figures from the latest KPMG Golf Participation Report, it noted that the number of golfers in England and Wales has been steadily falling since 2015, declining by nearly five per cent in that period.
